Passionately and Purposely Pushing Forward

I didn’t post last month. I often publish sparingly in December because internet (and interstate) traffic is slow. This year something remarkable and unexpected happened. A pile o’ people found Writing in Color and signed up during December. Welcome. I trust you’ve already found value in the site. I look forward to hearing from new creative folks with varied experiences and ideas. Don’t be shy!

If you’ve just signed up to receive updates,

How Smart Does a Writer Have to Be?

Do you ever wonder if you have the brilliance to be a writer?

Or look at the elitist literature types and think you’re not refined enough?

Is there only one chance to make a good impression?

Let me give you some hope and some help. Some help by saving you a few steps. Some hope by sharing with you some of the silly mistakes I’ve made…and why they don’t matter that much.

Why Creative People Need to be Organized (Part 1)

Is organization the enemy of creativity? Is it true that analytical people excel at order and creative people don’t? Maybe; but there are several important reasons why you might need to learn some techniques for “getting it together” and even remembering where you put “it” afterwards.

1. Keep more of your moneyFree- Writing- Free or Not

Now that I have your attention, let me ask a few questions. Have you ever repurchased something you lost,

Do You Know When to Delete Your Hard Work?

You know that feeling.

You’ve been writing for an hour and you’re not sure if any of it is usable. Each word you write feels like you’re swimming in spaghetti. Every time you pound the keys, the grip around your gut gets tighter. How do you know when to highlight the text, hover over the delete key and punch it?Writing-Enter Button-When to delete your article

A Journal Entry – Victory Dance

One of my stated purposes of this blog is to share the ups and down of writing. So go ahead and peek over my shoulder as I write a journal entry…

Recently I’ve had some victories. I believe, in the coming weeks, I’ll have more. In what form did they come? A few weeks back, I sold an article on reducing stress. I sold an article online this week.

Gaining Attention without Losing Ground…A Few Thoughts

You have heard the phrase, “pay attention.” You may have even joked, “I can’t afford to pay attention.” I heard these words this week in a different context and it made me stop and think. This is the way it read:

“You can pay for attention, or you can earn it.”Writing - money - attention

Whoa. Let that sink in.

You can hire the big guns and the fancy pants to put your name up in lights,

7 Things We Can Learn From Dead Writers

Sometimes it’s nice to have a little help from an experienced writer. It is great to have a mentor, but can we learn anything from those who lived 50, 100, or 200 years ago? Walk with me through history. The following nuggets of wisdom cover the gamut. Some are funny, some are serious, and all of them are right on target.

“Be careful about reading health books. You may die of a misprint.”  Mark Twain (Author 1835 – 1910) (Click to Tweet this)

Mark Twain was on to something here.

Being Comfortable in Your (Writer) Skin

Lots of books cover being comfortable in your own skin. They center on being content with who you are and what you do. As a writer, or someone who is required to write frequently, you should know this: Authors of any kind sometimes get misread (pun intended).  I hear some interesting opinions about writers. My responses to these misconceptions concerning them are in italics.

Writers are anti-social

If I avoided people,

What is Successful Writing?

A recent post, titled Success is in Your Hands, on the HeSo Project site started me thinking. What is my definition of writing success?

Fame:
Writing - hooks - starDo I want to be famous? Not really. I kind of value my privacy. I don’t think I want to be a household name like Duck-brand tape or Starbucks (both of which can become unhealthy addictions).

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to My Purpose

“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” Soren Kierkegaard

When I started writing this blog, I had three purposes in mind.

1. Sharing my writing journey; showing the victories and difficulties of freelance writing.
2. Expressing my thoughts on the craft of writing and encouraging other people who want to write better for their profession or their pleasure. Many have encouraged me.

What is Writing?

"A writer looks at a screen or piece of paper like a canvas. They see a country unexplored, a picture unpainted, a tale not told. They dare to venture into the barren land, explore its dark corners, and paint its pictures. Then they unveil the epic with the goal of compelling people to visit their newly discovered territory.”
