Your Submission Questions Answered (Part 2) Writing Contests

Welcome back. In this post, I’m answering more questions that were asked about writing contests. Part 1 was about submissions and guidelines.

Before I forget, I wanted to mention that there is a website “Writer Beware” that is of value to all writers. It’s a good place for staying ahead of those who would prey on writers, especially those with less experience.

1) What’s the best source for legitimate writing contests?

How to Write More Using Slow-Cooker Creativity

Summer, the perfect time for grilling. Well, not for me, since my apartment complex doesn’t allow a grill on our all-wood balcony. For some reason, their insurance company doesn’t like the idea. HoweverWriting - slow cooker, another device I like to take advantage of is the slow cooker. It’s incredible. A busy cook tosses in the right ingredients, sets the slow cooker controls, and goes about their other duties and the result is amazing.

Things Your Inner-Editor Needs to Hear You Say

You know your inner-editor.

He or she interrupts your creativity to tell you that you’ve misplaced a comma, or that you’ve used the wrong version of the word two. At the rigWriting-Computers-and coffeeht time, your inner-editor can enhance your writing. But sometimes you need to have a few words with that persistent punctuation pesterer and send them out for a latte so that you can get some work done.

Warning: You May Be Trashing Terrific Stories (and Leads)

You probably haven’t gone completely paperless. I still like to page through magazines. I get the Wednesday and Sunday newspapers. Even if you don’t subscribe to magazines, you may receive some from a hobby club you take part in or your insurance company or auto club. Some are available for free in stands around town.

Wrapping fish isn’t the thing to do with yesterday’s news. (Click to Tweet This!)

Don’t toss those magazines yet either.

What Difference Do Your Words Make?

In my last post, I said words are alive, and what writers do matters. I believe this. But others could say it’s simply my opinion. I won’t argue. I will present a few people, both past and present, which are also quite opinionated about words and writers. Below each quote are a few humble comments of my own.

Being Comfortable in Your (Writer) Skin

Lots of books cover being comfortable in your own skin. They center on being content with who you are and what you do. As a writer, or someone who is required to write frequently, you should know this: Authors of any kind sometimes get misread (pun intended).  I hear some interesting opinions about writers. My responses to these misconceptions concerning them are in italics.

Writers are anti-social

If I avoided people,

When Editing Gets Away From You (A Confession)

Writing in Color - EraserWhen I started this blog I said that it would include my writing journey, which I have done to some extent. However, I haven’t shared one of my handicaps as a writer. I love writing, but I also like killing. Yep. I bring words to life and then I take them out back and shoot them. This we call fun. In general this is a good quality for a writer to have,

What is Writing?

"A writer looks at a screen or piece of paper like a canvas. They see a country unexplored, a picture unpainted, a tale not told. They dare to venture into the barren land, explore its dark corners, and paint its pictures. Then they unveil the epic with the goal of compelling people to visit their newly discovered territory.”
