Blazing-Hot Writing Tactics to Combat Brain-Freeze

Are your writing thoughts caught up in a winter vortex?

Is the cold weather sending your mind into hibernation mode?

Yes, below-freezing temperatures can chill your ability to churn out ideas, words, and paragraphs. It’s hard finding a fresh writing angle when you want to curl up in a warm spot and hibernate, (regardless of what Punxsutawney Phil predicts).

It would be nice,

How to be Creatively Organized (Part 2)

I won’t make the case for being over-the-top organized. I’m not, and I don’t think that I should change to be so. Trying would likely stress me out as much as my “mess” wouMagifyer 2ld stress out the person who is meticulously organized. However, I’ve talked to several writers, artists and creative people who want to improve in this area.

It’s important to try different ideas and build your own system.

Our Legacy: A Few Thoughts, an Editor, and a Holiday

I didn’t write a Thanksgiving post before Thanksgiving last year. My blog at that time was only a few months old. I did write a post a week later detailing some of the things I was thankful for as a writer – some things that didn’t exist when I started writing. It is titled “Computers, Conferences, and Coffee”.

In this post, I chose something different. When I’m stuck for inspiration,

How to Continue to Write Without Neglecting Friends and Family

Writing is a solitary experience. Send all of your friends away, lock the door, put your butt in the chair and write, right? This is true, but often the inspirationMechanical-Pencil_hand writing 2 to write comes from hanging out with friends, chatting with family and from our everyday experiences. How can you have the time to get serious about writing, find time to keep up with family and friends, and make sure your pets don’t die in the process?

Really, There Are No Secrets

I’m going to tell you something personal.

In the past 22 months, I’ve lost 50 pounds. People have noticed, and it’s a good feeling. Often someone blurts out, “What did you do?”

I listened to my doctor’s advice, and decided I was going to do what was necessary. I researched nutrition, learned to cut hidden sugars and fats, and I exercised. Then, I told a few people so they could keep me accountable.

Things Your Mailman Won’t Tell You!

You might occasionally see your mailman deliver the mail. They’ll greet you with a smile, hand you any mail or packages, and they’re prepared to take anything you’re a mail trucksending out. As a writer, I like to see the mail come and go. Even though much of our communication is done by email and by electronic payments, the mailman is a welcome symbol of the writing profession. There are still companies that send checks by mail,

Need Writing Inspiration? Try an Out of Body Experience

Wait. Hear me out. I’m not advocating some ancient form of writing meditation. I’m not advising a trip to the Far East, nor Middle Earth. In my quest to keep my imagination well-oiled, I’ve discovered an additional method for getting started when my grey matter is stalled.

In the movie “Finding Forrester”, Jamal (Rob Brown) is encouraged to begin by typing a piece written by William Forrester (Sean Connery) and to start writing when his own words come to him.

Your Submission Questions Answered (Part 2) Writing Contests

Welcome back. In this post, I’m answering more questions that were asked about writing contests. Part 1 was about submissions and guidelines.

Before I forget, I wanted to mention that there is a website “Writer Beware” that is of value to all writers. It’s a good place for staying ahead of those who would prey on writers, especially those with less experience.

1) What’s the best source for legitimate writing contests?

Your Submission Questions Answered (Part 1)

As promised, this is the first post where I’ll respond to your submission questions. My experience comes from trial and error, study, conferences and conversations.

This week I will tackle the submission questions I’ve received and next week I’ll cover questions about contests. This is the plan. However, I am open to changing it. If your question has not been answered, please ask.

Now, drumroll please…

Will You Submit a Question About Submissions?

Recently, I’ve received questions about the submission process for short stories and articles. I’d like to do some posts about the chances I’ve taken, some of the missteps I’ve made and the successes I’ve had.

writing - question - emoticonThere are some writers who have more experience and I may point you to some of them. But there isn’t anyone who has had my experiences; unless they’re in some weird parallel universe. If so,

What is Writing?

"A writer looks at a screen or piece of paper like a canvas. They see a country unexplored, a picture unpainted, a tale not told. They dare to venture into the barren land, explore its dark corners, and paint its pictures. Then they unveil the epic with the goal of compelling people to visit their newly discovered territory.”
