How I Moved this Writing Blog Without Anxiety

I’d considered hosting my site for a while, but fear gripped me.
Move my writing blog to a new self-hosted domain? By myself? Talk about anxiety; that was it for me.

I moved past that fear to a blog that is smarter and cleaner than before. Some folks have asked, “How did you do it?” This is my story…to the best of my recollection.

This blog started as a free blog at WordPress.com.

Our Legacy: A Few Thoughts, an Editor, and a Holiday

I didn’t write a Thanksgiving post before Thanksgiving last year. My blog at that time was only a few months old. I did write a post a week later detailing some of the things I was thankful for as a writer – some things that didn’t exist when I started writing. It is titled “Computers, Conferences, and Coffee”.

In this post, I chose something different. When I’m stuck for inspiration,

Really, There Are No Secrets

I’m going to tell you something personal.

In the past 22 months, I’ve lost 50 pounds. People have noticed, and it’s a good feeling. Often someone blurts out, “What did you do?”

I listened to my doctor’s advice, and decided I was going to do what was necessary. I researched nutrition, learned to cut hidden sugars and fats, and I exercised. Then, I told a few people so they could keep me accountable.

Do You Know When to Delete Your Hard Work?

You know that feeling.

You’ve been writing for an hour and you’re not sure if any of it is usable. Each word you write feels like you’re swimming in spaghetti. Every time you pound the keys, the grip around your gut gets tighter. How do you know when to highlight the text, hover over the delete key and punch it?Writing-Enter Button-When to delete your article

Things Your Mailman Won’t Tell You!

You might occasionally see your mailman deliver the mail. They’ll greet you with a smile, hand you any mail or packages, and they’re prepared to take anything you’re a mail trucksending out. As a writer, I like to see the mail come and go. Even though much of our communication is done by email and by electronic payments, the mailman is a welcome symbol of the writing profession. There are still companies that send checks by mail,

Your Submission Questions Answered (Part 2) Writing Contests

Welcome back. In this post, I’m answering more questions that were asked about writing contests. Part 1 was about submissions and guidelines.

Before I forget, I wanted to mention that there is a website “Writer Beware” that is of value to all writers. It’s a good place for staying ahead of those who would prey on writers, especially those with less experience.

1) What’s the best source for legitimate writing contests?

Your Submission Questions Answered (Part 1)

As promised, this is the first post where I’ll respond to your submission questions. My experience comes from trial and error, study, conferences and conversations.

This week I will tackle the submission questions I’ve received and next week I’ll cover questions about contests. This is the plan. However, I am open to changing it. If your question has not been answered, please ask.

Now, drumroll please…

What is Writing?

"A writer looks at a screen or piece of paper like a canvas. They see a country unexplored, a picture unpainted, a tale not told. They dare to venture into the barren land, explore its dark corners, and paint its pictures. Then they unveil the epic with the goal of compelling people to visit their newly discovered territory.”
